It’s official: Roseanne is returning to our TV screens.

ABC has announced that the ’90s family sitcom, headlined by comedian Roseanne Barr, is getting an eight-episode revival.

While an official release date has not been given, it is thought it will return at some point mid-season.

“We’re rebooting Roseanne,” ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey said Tuesday.

“The Conners’ joys and struggles are as relevant and hilarious today as they were then, and there’s really no one better to comment on our modern America than Roseanne,” ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey wrote in a statement.

The original  show focused on the working class Conner family in Illinois.

The reboot comes almost 20 years after the Emmy-winning show was taken off the air and will feature most of the original cast.

Roseanne Barr (Roseanne), John Goodman (Dan), Sara Gilbert (Darlene), Laurie Metcalf (Jackie), Michael Fishman (D.J.) and Lecy Goranson (Becky).

Sarah Chalke, who played the character Becky in later seasons, will also appear but in another role.

It is not yet known if Big Bang star Johnny Galecki who played David on Roseanne will return.

At it’s peak it was ranked as the top series on TV during 1989-90 and drew almost 17 million viewer to it’s final episode.

While re-runs have continued to be shown since it came to an end in 1997 the reboot will be the first time the cast are all back together.

In 2009 star of the show Roseanne discussed where she thought the characters of the show would be now.

The highlights were: “DJ gets published. Mark dies in Iraq. David leaves Darlene for a woman half his age. Darlene meets a woman and they have a test tube baby. Becky works at Wal-Mart. Roseanne and Jackie open the first medical marijuana dispensary in town and pay off the mortgage before the house is foreclosed on.”

Roseanne marks the latest old series to be brought back for new episodes. Earlier this year NBC announced they are bringing back Will & Grace as well as 24, Prison Break and The X-Files.

ABC is also bringing back Twin Peaks which will shown on Showtime.
