Sometimes, part of an actor’s job is getting down and dirty with a fellow actor for a steamy love scene.

Audiences love a good smooch, and it’s often easy to imagine that the actors filming such scenes are enjoying making out just as much as the characters they’re playing are.

However, this is not always the case. Sometimes, actors would rather play tonsil tennis with a dustbin full of dead fish than with some of the biggest stars in the world! Here are twenty times when some of your favorite actors really, REALLY did not want to kiss their co-stars. Pucker up!

Ryan Gosling & Rachel McAdams

Fans of The Notebook would never countenance the idea that stars Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling wouldn’t have been anything other than utterly delighted to make out with one another. The reality, however, is the two co-stars disliked one another intensely. Gosling was so disgusted with the idea of making out with McAdams that he even approached director Nick Cassavetes and said, “I can’t. I can’t do it with her. I’m just not getting anything from this.” Luckily, Cassavetes refused to replace McAdams, and the results spoke for themselves!

Harrison Ford & Sean Young

The love scene between Harrison Ford and Sean Young in Blade Runner was dubbed ‘the hate scene’ by crew members, and for very good reasons. Young was a notoriously difficult actress to get along with, and Ford has never exactly been a warm and cuddly character. The two hated one another on set, and it was a minor miracle that they agreed to kiss one another at all!

Jennifer Lawrence & Chris Pratt

There were rumors swirling around the set of 2016’s Passengers that stars Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt were more than good friends. This would have been OK were it not for the fact that Pratt was a married man at the time. Lawrence had huge reservations about fanning the rumor flames, and was really reluctant to kiss her co-star. “I got really, really drunk,” she said, explaining how she geared up for her love scene. “But then that led to more anxiety when I got home because I was like, ‘What have I done?’ I don’t know.’ And he was married. And it was going to be my first time kissing a married man, and guilt is the worst feeling in your stomach.” She was right to be worried. Pratt and his wife Anna Faris split up in 2017, and Lawrence was blamed for tearing the couple apart.

Julia Roberts & Nick Nolte

For the 1994 movie I Love Trouble, the producers had a big problem. Co-stars Julia Roberts and Nick Nolte loathed one another. The two had a long-running feud, and refused to film several scenes together, including love scenes. Body doubles often had to be used, as the pair couldn’t stand to be in the same room with one another after Roberts branded Nolte ‘disgusting’ and Nolte returned the favor by calling the Pretty Woman star ‘not a nice person’. Ouch! So, no chance of I Love Trouble 2 then?

Jennifer Lawrence & Josh Hutcherson

Jennifer Lawrence again! This time, it wasn’t her doing the complaining, but her co-star. In an interview with Elle magazine in October 2014, Lawrence’s Hunger Games: Catching Fire co-star Josh Hutcherson said he hadn’t enjoyed kissing his co-star because she was a really ‘slobbery’ kisser. Hutcherson also complained that Lawrence had a ‘dribbling problem’. Nice!

Helena Bonham Carter & Woody Allen

Bonham Carter starred alongside the maverick director in 1995’s Mighty Aphrodite, and when it came to the kissing scene, she was none too happy with her co-star’s list of demands. “He tells you up front certain ways of kissing he does not want,” the actress explained. “No exchange of liquid is permitted. It can be a bit offensive because he makes no effort at all. It’s like kissing the Berlin Wall.” Sexy!

Johnny Depp & Carey Mulligan

It’s not always because the actors despise one another that a kissing scene can be an uncomfortable experience. In the case of Carey Mulligan, when it came time to kiss co-star Johnny Depp during filming of 2009’s Public Enemies, it was nerves that ruined the scene. Carey was in awe of the older actor, and when it came time to make out with him, nerves got the better of her and the scene had to be shot over and over again. “It was 16 times, but it was cut out of the film because I looked so uncomfortable. I was kissing Johnny Depp and I got really nervous,” she said. Some women dream of kissing Johnny Depp sixteen times in a row, Carey!

Amanda Seyfried & Megan Fox

The two actresses were friends when they were cast opposite one another in 2009’s Jennifer’s Body, which made the scene where they make out rather awkward. “We knew that it was going to play a really big role in publicizing the movie,” said Seyfried. “We kind of rolled our eyes at the idea of having to make out.” They did it anyway, with Seyfried joking, “She’s my friend, but her breath stinks!”

Reece Witherspoon & Robert Pattinson

Things should have been plain sailing for Reece Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson when it came time to make out for their love scene in 2011’s Water For Elephants. Unlike pretty much everyone else on this list, the two actors didn’t hate one another or have any baggage that would make their scene uncomfortable. However, things turned out to be less than Witherspoon had hoped for when Pattinson turned up for the scene with a particularly nasty cold. The two did do the scene, but it was under duress as Witherspoon later reported that Pattinson had snot leaking out of his nose the whole time. Eeeeeeuw!

Dakota Johnson & Jamie Dornan

It must have been rather awkward for Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan to film their steamy sex scenes for 2015’s 50 Shades of Grey considering the two had absolutely no chemistry with one another whatsoever. They somehow got through it, however, and have since gone on to film not one, but two sequels to the raunchy S&M thriller.

James Franco & Vanessa Hudgens

Vanessa Hudgens was called upon to get down and dirty with co-star James Franco and actress Ashley Benson in a steamy poolside scene in the 2012 crime movie, Spring Breakers. Hudgens later revealed that it wasn’t Franco she wanted to be kissing during that scene in an interview with Yahoo! Movies in 2013. “Eeeew! I don’t want to kiss James! I’d rather kiss a girl than James Franco,” she said. Yikes! She then went further, saying her kiss with Franco was the worst on-screen kiss she’d ever had.

Kate Hudson & Dane Cook

Dane Cook was perfectly happy to kiss My Best Friend’s Girl co-star Kate Hudson until she did something that made the scene very, VERY uncomfortable for him. Hudson’s a bit of a joker and – unbeknownst to Cook – she downed a plated of onions before filming their love scene. Cook got the shock of his life when he went in for the kiss, later telling ABC News that it was ‘the worst onscreen kiss ever’.

Kirsten Dunst & Tobey Maguire

Mary Jane kissing Peter Parker in Spider-Man is one of the most iconic kisses in movie history. Unfortunately, it wasn’t quite so good for Tobey Maguire to film as it was for the audience to experience in the cinema. In an interview with the Vancouver Sun in 2014, Maguire recalled that the kiss had been a nightmare to shoot on account of the fact he was hanging upside down at the time with all the blood rushing to his head and rainwater gushing up his nose. Doesn’t sound quite so romantic now, does it?

Patrick Swayze & Jennifer Grey

They may be made for one another onscreen, but in real life, Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey were nothing like the characters they played in 1987’s Dirty Dancing. In his memoirs, Swayze revealed that filming the movie with Grey was a ‘horrible experience’. He described the actress as overly-emotional, highly-strung and said that she would go out of her way ruin scenes on purpose. Looks like somebody would have been only too happy to put Baby in the corner!

Steve Carell & Dwayne Johnson

Straight actors are sometimes called upon to kiss members of the same sex. This was the case in the 2008 big screen adaptation of the 1960s spy comedy, Get Smart. In the movie, Dwayne ‘the Rock’ Johnson and funnyman Steve Carrell were required to kiss, but the Rock was not happy about it. He described Carrell’s lips as feeling like the bottom of a cat’s paw and said that his tongue felt like kitty litter. Miaow!

Tom Cruise & Thandie Newton

Thandie Newton was cast as the love interest in 2000’s Mission: Impossible II opposite Hollywood megastar Tom Cruise. The actress had no beef with kissing one of the most famous men in the world … right up until the moment they started making out. She later described the experience as ‘slightly icky’, claiming Cruise did ‘wet doggy kisses’. Nice!

Alyson Hannigan & Jason Segel

Alyson Hannigan played the girlfriend and then the wife of actor Jason Segal in the hit TV show, How I Met Your Mother. It’s pretty obvious that playing somebody’s girlfriend / wife on a long-running show will require you to kiss them from time to time, and this posed a huge problem for Hannigan. Segal was a heavy smoker, and Hannigan hated the smell and taste of smoke. It became such a huge headache for the actress that Segal eventually quit smoking so she didn’t have to put up with the smell. Nice work, Jason!

Shailene Woodley & Miles Teller

When it came time to film the smooching scenes on the 2013 romantic comedy The Spectacular Now, actress Shailene Woodley thought it would be plain-sailing. She hadn’t banked on co-star Miles Teller’s penchant for ancient Chinese medicine. Teller was taking herbal supplements at the time, and the result was VERY bad breath. The only way Woodley could bare kissing the actor was by making him drink copious amounts of Gatorade before they got down to it! Stinky!

Jennifer Lawrence & Christian Bale

Jennifer Lawrence had waited a long time to make out with Welsh actor Christian Bale. However, when the time came to get low down and dirty with the Batman star, she was less than impressed. For the movie American Hustle, Bale had piled on the pounds and sported one of the worst comb-overs in movie history. “I finally get to make out with Christian Bale and he’s a really fat guy,” Lawrence complained. Ouch!

Rupert Grint & Emma Watson

Hermione and Ron finally shared a kiss in 2011’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallow: Part 2. It was one of the moments fans had been waiting for, but the sentiment was not shared by actors Rupert Grint and Emma Watson. As well as knowing one another since they were eleven years old – and thus being more like brother and sister than potential love interests – the two were not getting on particularly well at the time of filming. They got on with the job regardless, much to the delight of their fans.

Jennifer Lawrence And Josh Hutcherson/ Liam Hemsworth

In the Hunger Games films, Jennifer Lawrence was tasked with kissing not one but two co-stars, Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson! Unfortunately the trio get on so well, that J-Law sees them both as her brothers. This made kissing them very awkward indeed!
