Law and Order has been on our screens for an impressive 20 seasons and definitely shows no signs of stopping.
Cast members have been and gone, some quitting acting all together and others going on to the silver screen.
Here is what the cast looked like when it all began compared to now:
Jill Hennessy as D.A. Claire Kincaid
After playing the District Attorney for three seasons, Jilly Hennessy left Law & Order to join her fellow cast mate, Chris North, on The Good Wife. She also appears on Madam Secretary.
Angie Harmon As D.A. Abbie Carmichael
Angie appeared in seasons nine to eleven of Law & Order, and is a regular on TV. She continued her success on the show Rizzoli & Isles.
Tamara Tunie As Dr. Melinda Warner
Tamara Tunie plays a medical assistant in the show. Although she has recently appeared on the silver screen alongside Denzel Washington, in Flight – she is is probably best know for her role of Jessica Griffin on the soap opera As The World Turns.
Carolyn McCormick As Dr. Elizabeth Olivet
Caroline starred in the first episodes of Law & Order and later returned to play another eight seasons for The Special Victims Unit. She hasn’t really done much other than this show.
Carey Lowell As D.A. Jamie Ross
There was a part of Law & Order named Trial by Dury – which Carey Lowell appeared in. After leaving she starred in the movie C Street.
Chris Noth As Detective Mike Logan
Detective Logan was known for his hot temper and lethario ways. He started in the show from 1990 to 1995 but was later but was transferred to the Staten Island Domestic Disputes Squad. In reality Noth actually left the show due to a salary dispute – but since then he has gone on to play iconic roles such as Big from Sex and the City.
Benjamin Bratt As Detective Rey Curtis
Detective Curtis was known for following the rules. He left the squad after his wife was suffering MS. Bratt actually left the show in 2009 and has since been recognised for his roles in Miss Congeniality and Traffic.
Fred Dalton Thompson As D.A. Arthur Branch
Prior to starring in Law & Order, Thompson was actually the senator of Tennessee from 1994 to 2003. He took a break form the show in 2008 to try and win a spot as the Republican candidate for president – but it turns out he was better at acting as an attorney than being a politician. He sadly passed away in 2015 and the age of 73.
Jerry Orbach As Detective Lennie Briscoe
Orbach starred on the show from 1991 to 2004 but he was also known for acting on stage, even winning a Tony award. He sadly died in 2004 at the age of 69.
Kathryn Erbe As Detective Alexandra Eames
Detective Eames was a practical and reliable member of the Manhattan’s Major Case Squad . Actress Kathryn Erbe also appeared in several movies such as The Love Guru and Mother’s House.
Vincent D’Onofrio As Detective Robert Goren
Detective Goren worked alongside Detective Eames – he was unpredictable but stayed in the squad for a decade. Since leaving the show, Vincent has starred in films such as Staten Island and Jurassic World.
S.Epatha Merkerson As Lt. Anita Van Buren
Lieutenant Buren was a constant in the show for an impressive 21 years, starring in a massive 391 episodes. However actress Epatha was diagnosed cervical cancer and had to leave Law & Order.
Anthony Anderson As Detective Kevin Bernard
Anthony Anderson has appeared on the most reasons three seasons of the show. He now stars alongside Tracy Ellis Ross in the comedy, Black-ish.
Paul Sorvino As Sgt. Phil Cerreta
Paul Sorvino is known for playing mobsters and gangsters who breaks all the rules – however in Law & Order he was on the other side of the law.
Sam Waterston As Jack McCoy
For over 16 years, Waterson played the ruthless NYC District Attorney. However now he can be seen on the TV series The Newsroom and Grace and Frankie.
Dennis Farina As Detective Joe Fontana
Before he sadly died in 2013, Dennis Farina played Joe Fontana in seasons 15 and 16. He was a real-life police officer and was often type-cast as a cop. He also appeared in What Happens In Vegas and Get Short.
Jesse L. Martin As Detective Ed Green
Detective Ed Green was not afraid to break the law in order to catch the bad guy. More recently the actor has appeared in The Flash.
Michael Moriarty As D.A. Ben Stone
Moriarty appeared in the first four seasons of Law & Order. He actually went on to win an Emmy for his performance as James Dean’s dad in the biopic of the actor’s short life.
George Dzundza As Sgt. Max Greevey
Dzunda appeared in the first season of the show. His career went from height to height in reoccurring roles throughout the 1990s and 2000s in Grey’s Anatomy.
Jeremy Sisto As Detective Cyrus Lupo
Since playing a detective on the last three seasons of Law & Order, Sisto kept busy with a role in The Returned and another in Wicked City.
Linus Roache As D.A. Michael Cutter
The British actor was an attorney through series 18 to 20.
Richard Belzer As Detective John Munch
Brooks appeared in the first three seasons of the show. He then went on to appear in Being Mary Jane and The Good Wife.
Ice-T As Detective Odafin Tutuola
Rapper Ice-T first appeared in the show in 2000 and has recently made a comeback to the NBC show.
Christopher Meloni As Detective Elliot Stabler
Detective Stabler worked to solve sex crimes throughout New York. Stabler actually received an Emmy nomination after 12 years in the show and recently appeared in True Blood and Man of Steel.
Dann Florek As Captain Donald Cragen
B.D Wong not only stars in Law & Order, but also Gotham.
Stephanie March As A.D.A. Alexandra Cabot
Stephanie’s character left the show after season 5 but later returned for four more seasons. he has had small roles since the show in films like Made in Jersey and Happy Endings.
Diane Neal As A.D.A. Casey Novak
Diane Neal is the longest serving A.D.A. for the franchise. She left the show after 13 years. She can now be seen in NCIS and Suits.
Elisabeth Röhm As A.D.A. Serena Southerlyn
Elisabeth Röhm played Assistant District Attorney Serena Southerlyn.
Alana de la Garza As Connie Rubirosa
Garza also appeared in CSI: Miami.
