Gardens can be used for so many different things – whether it’s to satisfy your love of flowers, an area for your children to play, or even if you just prefer something low maintenance, it’s a space for everyone.
One family came to the conclusion that they were tired of their sad-looking back garden, so decided to take it to the next level with a huge new project.
Take a look at how they totally transformed their garden into a tropical haven.
The family had an idea in mind which the whole household would enjoy. They began planning how they wanted their new garden to look.
Birdseye View: Once the plans were in place, the family came to a final decision that not only would cost a lot of money but a lot of time too. This photo was taken on day one of the ‘next stage’.
They knew they needed to execute the project with serious precision in order to get the most out of their garden. The fact that their space was untouched helped with the beginning stages of the excavation.
Firstly, they brought in a small bulldozer for excavating, this would remove all of the dead grass and a layer of soil so they would be able to dig further down.
The use of the excavator meant they could hurry the project along, as they could remove lots of soil in a short space of time.
This photo shows just how close to the family’s home the work was taking place.
The family also borrowed a tractor from one of the neighbours in order to help them move the dirt.
It was now at the point where they could begin to install the water conduit. The precision at this point was vital in ensuring the project ran smoothly.
After installing a water fountain, the water conduits could run from the fountain to the garage, where the filtration system could be housed.
In the earlier images it looked like the project was taking over the whole garden, but luckily the family had a second section to the garden that allowed them to continue their normal active life.
Before continuing with the waterworks, they did some landscaping down the sides of the garden. They planted some trees and used stones to create a natural feel to the space.
The next phase of the project involved lining the ground with felt liner in order to shape the base. This would also stop any weeds from growing through in the future.
The pond liner was installed all in one piece. This had to be specially ordered from Germany in order to fit the space perfectly.
The water from the pond is filtered through to the garage, using these large barrels the water is circulated back into the pond.
The next stage involved filling the pond with heavy bricks, taking five men and eight hours to complete.
They then had to lay slabs on the base of the pond. They chose some grey slate to match the bricks they had used for the outer edges of the pond.
Once they had finished laying the slabs at the bottom of the pond, the next stage was to add some more rocks to the surrounding area and pump in the water. You’d think they would be finished with this stage, but no!
They continued to pump water into the pond until it spilled over the edges, creating a beautifully flowing natural pool.
Here is an image of the pool lit up at night time. The light reflects off the surface of the water giving it an almost glassy effect. But the father of the project wasn’t finished yet!
The project continued into the winter months, meaning the pond froze over, which basically created an ice rink!
The next stage would involve laying the decking next to the pond, so the family had somewhere to sit and admire their beautiful garden and hard work.
They had to complete the decking in stages, moving their furniture around and completing each section at a time.
Finally, the decking was complete. The wooden decking runs all the way around the natural looking pool, meaning you can enjoy it from every angle!
Just imagine sitting on the decking on a summer’s day swinging on the hammock! Perfection!
Incredibly they have been able to still incorporate over features of the garden into the design!
The natural pool looks like something straight out of the mediterranean! It was now the perfect space for the family to enjoy.
Before and after! It’s amazing to think this is the same garden!
