The United States has 50 states – which we hope you already knew! The borders and names of these states have changed over time – for example, West Virginia was indeed once part of Virginia. And the reason there is a North Dakota and a South Dakota is that Congressional Republicans were looking to increase their numbers. Some states we had back in the day don’t even exist anymore – did you know there was once a state named Franklin? It was located in what is now Tennessee and it was named for Benjamin Franklin. At this point, though, we’ve pretty much settled into the borders of the 48 contiguous states for a while now, so most U.S. residents should have a fairly good handle on what state is where. But the truth is that lots of us don’t!

You probably know where YOUR state is, and the states surrounding it, but when you get farther away…do you know what all those states are? Can you remember whether Kansas or Nebraska is farther north? What about Washington and Oregon? And is that Alabama or Mississippi? Test your geography skills with this quiz! Most people don’t get 100% – so if you do that well, you must be REALLY good.
